Who are we?

Great Clerkes Farm is a 200-acre arable and poultry farm in North Essex, near to the historic market towns of Saffron Walden and Thaxted.  You can find out more about the area, and other places to visit, on these websites www.thaxted.co.uk and www.visitsaffronwalden.gov.uk. We produce the finest, free-range poultry and try to only use local suppliers where possible to create truly low-mileage produce that has led a happy and healthy life. Because we rear all the birds ourselves on the farm and manage them from day old right through to the final product, we can guarantee all our meat has lived a happy life and you will be receiving only the tastiest food.

The Hughes family have been farming at Great Clerkes for three generations and you can find out all about the history of the farm on our history page.

In 2008 Clerkes Geese were selected by Heston Blumenthal in a blind taste test to be the main focus of his Christmas feast in his BBC One Christmas Special. Heston spent time on the farm during the summer of 2008, creating a specialist diet for a select number of our geese. You can watch Simon and Heston in a clip from the show on youtube on our On The Telly page.

We produce the best-tasting, free-range chicken, goose and quail and we hand-make on the farm a wide range of products, from chicken sausages and pies, to smoked meats, chicken dishes, pieces, burgers and kebabs, goose fat and quail eggs. For a full list of our products please view our shop page.

At the weekends we attend local farmers markets and have a stand at Sheering, Matching Tye, and Little Waltham and London ones in Alexandra Palace and Fulham.  You can see the dates and times of these markets on our markets page. When we’re not at markets, we’re busy supplying our local butchers, farm shops and restaurants with our poultry. We are lucky to have fantastic, traditional farm shops and butchers in our area and you can visit all of their websites to find out more about them on our Stockists page.

You can order directly from us online or on the phone and collect your items from the farm, or we can arrange delivery for you. There is no delivery fee for orders within a 10 mile radius but a minimum order fee does apply. To buy our produce, please visit our shop.  Or if you have any questions, queries, points, opinions, thoughts, ideas, facts, conjectures, conceptions or conclusions, any  postulations, presumptions, views, theorems, theories or thesis’s then please contact us.
